Medical studies confirm that, even without
injuries, patients strapped to spineboards or backboards are agonized by areas of
bony prominences (shoulder blades, hip bones) that lose circulation in 10
minutes. This loss of blood flow (ischemia) causes pain and injury.
Protocol requires accident
victims to be X-rayed while strapped to the spineboard leaving them
restrained until a physician receives the results. Typically, this adds 1 -
3 hours of trauma for the accident victim while circulation is
